A WINTER ADVENTURE RACE FOR ALL KIDS AGES 7-17
Like all of our events, the Kidarod has now been modified for Covid-19 to allow for kids and families to be able to safely enjoy outdoor adventure together. The Kidarod combines climbing, pulling, sliding, running, and obstacles into an unforgettable 2-mile winter adventure. No special equipment needed. Just layers for winter weather and shoes with good traction (or boots if snow is deep).
The Kidarod is inspired by Alaska's famous dog sled race, except with kids doing the work and huskies watching for fun.
Iditarod History: When diphtheria gripped the village of Nome during the brutal winter of 1925, there was only one hope to save the townspeople. It was to have teams of huskies and their mushers relay the life-saving serum from Anchorage hundreds of miles to Nome. The nation held its breath waiting for progress reports of the slow and nearly impossible trek across the dark and dangerous tundra. But thanks to Togo, a lead dog who pulled the serum 260 miles over 3 days, and Balto the dog who led his team on the final pull into Nome, the town was saved.
Reenacting the original "Race of Mercy": We refer to our startline at the Kidarod as "Anchorage" where you'll collect your vile of symbolic serum you'll protect and carry along the 2-mile winter adventure course to the finish line at "Nome".
